RESUMO

Significance: Quantitative optical polarimetry has received considerable recent attention owing to its potential for being an efficient diagnosis and characterizing tool with potential applications in biomedical research and various other disciplines. In this regard, it is crucial to validate various Mueller matrix (MM) decomposition methods, which are utilized to extract and quantify the intrinsic individual polarization anisotropy properties of various complex optical media. Aim: To quantitatively compare the performance of both polar and differential MM decomposition methods for probing the structural and morphological changes in complex optical media through analyzing their intrinsic individual polarization parameters, which are extracted using the respective decomposition algorithms. We also intend to utilize the decomposition-derived anisotropy parameters to distinguish among the cervical tissues with different grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and to characterize the healing efficiency of an organic crystal. Approach: Polarization MM of the cervical tissues with different grades of CIN and the different stages of the self-healing crystal are recorded with a home-built MM imaging setup in the transmission detection geometry with a spatial resolution of ≈400 nm. The measured MMs are then processed with both the polar and differential MM decomposition methods to extract the individual polarization parameters of the respective samples. The derived polarization parameters are further analyzed to validate and compare the performance of both the MM decomposition methods for probing and characterizing the structural changes in the respective investigated optical media through their decomposition-derived intrinsic individual polarization properties. Results: Pronounced differences in the decomposed-derived polarization anisotropy parameters are observed for cervical tissue sections with different grades of CIN. While a significant increase in the depolarization parameter (Δ) is obtained with the increment of CIN stages for both the polar [Δ=0.32 for CIN grade one (CIN-I) and Δ=0.53 for CIN grade two (CIN-II))] and differential (Δ=0.35 for CIN-I and Δ=0.56 for CIN-II) decomposition methods, a trend reversal is seen for the linear diattenuation parameter (dL), indicating the structural distortion in the cervical morphology due to the CIN disease. More importantly, with the differential decomposition algorithm, the magnitude of the derived dL parameter decreases from 0.26 to 0.19 with the progression of CIN, which was not being probed by the polar decomposition method. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that the differential decomposition of MM holds certain advantages over the polar decomposition method to characterize and probe the structural changes in the cervical tissues with different grades of CIN. Although the quantified individual polarization parameters obtained through both the MM decomposition methods can be used as useful metrics to characterize various optical media, in case of complex turbid media such as biological tissues, incorporation of the differential decomposition technique may yield more efficient information. Also, the study highlights the utilization of MM polarimetry with an appropriate decomposition technique as an efficient diagnostic and characterizing tool in the realm of biomedical clinical research, and various other disciplines.

RESUMO

Scleral biomechanics plays a key role in the understanding of myopia progression. In this study, we characterized the elastic properties of sclera using an air-coupled ultrasonic (ACUS) optical coherence elastography (OCE) system. New Zealand rabbit eyes (n=7) were measured (<24hr postmortem) in four scleral locations: superior/inferior temporal (ST, IT), and superior/inferior nasal (SN, IN) maintaining an intraocular pressure of 15 mmHg. Elastic waves were induced in the sclera, and wave propagation velocity and shear modulus were measured along two directions: circumferential (superior-inferior) and meridional (nasal-temporal). Wave velocity in scleral tissue ranged from 6 to 24 m/s and shear modulus from 11 to 150 kPa. Velocity was significantly higher (p<.001) in the circumferential vs. meridional directions in the following locations: ST:15.83±2.85 vs 9.43±1.68 m/s, IT:15.00±3.98 vs 8.93±1.53 m/s; SN:16.79±4.30 vs 9.27±1.47 m/s; and IN:13.92±3.85 vs 8.57±1.46 m/s. The average shear modulus in the circumferential was also significantly higher (p<.001) than in the meridional direction for all locations: 65.37±6.04 vs 22.55±1.36 kPa. These results show that the rabbit sclera is mechanically anisotropic with higher rigidity in the circumferential direction compared to the meridional direction. ACUS-OCE is a promising non-invasive method to quantify the biomechanical changes in scleral tissue for future studies involving myopia treatments.

RESUMO

The use of radiotherapy in tumor treatment has become increasingly prominent and has emerged as one of the main tools for treating malignant tumors. Current radiation therapy for glioma employs 125I seeds for brachytherapy, which cannot be combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a dual-microcavity capsule structure that integrates radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used to simulate the structure of the dual-microcavity capsule with a 125I liquid radioactive source. Based on the simulation results, two kinds of dual-microcavity capsule structures are optimized, and the optimized dual-microcavity capsule structure is obtained. Finally, the dosimetric parameters of the two optimized dual-microcavity capsule structures are analyzed and compared with those of other 125I seeds. The optimization tests show that the improved dual-capsule dual-microcavity structure is more effective than the single-capsule dual-microcavity structure. At an activity of 5 mCi, the average absorbed dose rate is 71.2 cGy/h in the center of the optimized dual-capsule dual-microcavity structure and 45.8 cGy/h in the center of the optimized single-capsule dual-microcavity structure. Although the radial dose function and anisotropy function exhibite variations from the data of other 125I seeds, they are generally similar. The absorbed dose rate decreases exponentially with increasing distance from the center of the capsule, which can reduce the damage to the surrounding tissues and organs while increasing the dose. The capsule structure has a better irradiation effect than conventional 125I seeds and can accomplish long-term, stable, low-dose continuous irradiation to form local high-dose radiation therapy for glioma.

RESUMO

AIMS: We aimed to examine the long-term benefits of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on white matter plasticity in the cortical midline structures (CMS) for a period of 2 years in patients with panic disorder and the relationships between white matter changes in the CMS and severity of state and trait symptoms. METHODS: Seventy-one participants were enrolled and underwent diffusion tensor imaging at baseline and after 2 years (26 who received MBCT as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy [MBCT+PT], 20 treated with pharmacotherapy alone [PT-alone], and 25 healthy controls [HCs]). The severity of symptoms and fractional anisotropy (FA) in white matter regions underlying the CMS were assessed at baseline and 2-year follow-up. RESULTS: The MBCT+PT group showed better outcomes after 2 years than the PT-alone group. The groups showed different FA changes: the MBCT+PT group showed decreased FA in the left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC); the PT-alone group showed increased FA in the bilateral dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and precuneus. Decreased white matter FA in the ACC, PCC, and precuneus was associated with improvements in the severity of state and trait symptoms in patients with panic disorder. CONCLUSION: Alleviation of excessive white matter connectivity in the CMS after MBCT leads to improvements in clinical symptoms and trait vulnerability in patients with panic disorder. Our study provides new evidence for the long-term benefits of MBCT on white matter plasticity and its clinical applicability as a robust treatment for panic disorder.

RESUMO

The neural pathways that carry information from the foveal, macular, and peripheral visual fields have distinct biological properties. The optic radiations (OR) carry foveal and peripheral information from the thalamus to the primary visual cortex (V1) through adjacent but separate pathways in the white matter. Here, we perform white matter tractometry using pyAFQ on a large sample of diffusion MRI (dMRI) data from subjects with healthy vision in the U.K. Biobank dataset (UKBB; N = 5382; age 45-81). We use pyAFQ to characterize white matter tissue properties in parts of the OR that transmit information about the foveal, macular, and peripheral visual fields, and to characterize the changes in these tissue properties with age. We find that (1) independent of age there is higher fractional anisotropy, lower mean diffusivity, and higher mean kurtosis in the foveal and macular OR than in peripheral OR, consistent with denser, more organized nerve fiber populations in foveal/parafoveal pathways, and (2) age is associated with increased diffusivity and decreased anisotropy and kurtosis, consistent with decreased density and tissue organization with aging. However, anisotropy in foveal OR decreases faster with age than in peripheral OR, while diffusivity increases faster in peripheral OR, suggesting foveal/peri-foveal OR and peripheral OR differ in how they age.

RESUMO

Exposure to environmental contaminants is an important public health concern for the Inuit population of northern Québec, who have been exposed to mercury (Hg), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and lead (Pb). During the last 25 years, the Nunavik Child Development Study (NCDS) birth cohort has reported adverse associations between these exposures and brain function outcomes. In the current study, we aimed to determine whether contaminant exposure is associated with alterations of the corpus callosum (CC), which plays an important role in various cognitive, motor and sensory function processes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was administered to 89 NCDS participants (mean age ± SD = 18.4 ± 1.2). Diffusion-weighted imaging was assessed to characterize the microstructure of the CC white matter in 7 structurally and functionally distinct regions of interest (ROIs) using a tractography-based segmentation approach. The following metrics were computed: fiber tract density, fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD). Multiple linear regression models adjusted for sex, age, current alcohol/drug use and fish nutrients (omega-3 fatty acids and selenium) were conducted to assess the association between diffusion-weighted imaging metrics and Hg, PCB 153 and Pb concentrations obtained at birth in the cord blood and postnatally (mean values from blood samples at 11 and 18 years of age). Exposures were not associated with fiber tract density. Nor were significant associations found with cord and postnatal blood Pb concentrations for FA. However, pre- and postnatal Hg and PCB concentrations were significantly associated with higher FA of several regions of the CC, namely anterior midbody, posterior midbody, isthmus, and splenium, with the most pronounced effects observed in the splenium. FA results were mainly associated with lower RD. This study shows that exposure to Hg and PCB 153 alters the posterior microstructure of the CC, providing neuroimaging evidence of how developmental exposure to environmental chemicals can impair brain function and behavior in late adolescence.

RESUMO

This work presents a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of an organic co-crystal composed of N-iodosaccharin and pyridine (NISac·py) under hydrostatic pressure ranging from 0.00 (5) GPa to 4.5 (2) GPa. NISac·py crystallizes in the monoclinic system (space group B21/e). The unconventional setting of the space group is adopted (the conventional setting is P21/c, No. 14) to emphasise the strongly pseudo-orthorhombic symmetry of the lattice, with a ß angle very close to 90°. The crystal structure contains one molecule each of N-iodosaccharin (NISac) and pyridine (py) in the asymmetric unit (Z' = 1), linked via an Nsac...I...N'py halogen-bonding motif. A gradual modification of this motif is observed under pressure as a result of changes in the crystalline environment. Mechanical twinning is observed under compression and the sample splits into two domains, spanning an unequal volume that is mapped by a twofold rotation about the [100] direction of the B21/e unit cell. The twinning is particularly significant at high pressure, being reversible when the pressure is released. The structure of the twinned sample reveals the continuity of a substantial substructure across the composition plane. The presence of this common substructure in the two orientations of the twinned individuals can be interpreted as a structural reason for the formation of the twin and is the first observed example in a molecular crystal. These results indicate that the anisotropy of intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure results in an anisotropic strain generated upon the action of hydrostatic compression. Periodic density functional theory calculations were carried out by considering an isotropic external pressure, the results showing good agreement with the experimental findings. The bulk modulus of the crystal was obtained from the equations of state, being 7 (1) GPa for experimental data and 6.8 (5) GPa for theoretical data.

RESUMO

White matter alterations in patients with chronic migraine (CM) have been reported. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes are clinical syndromes proposed by TCM doctors based on long-term clinical observation and classification of the clinical symptoms and signs of CM patients. This study aimed to analyze the whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data of CM patients with different types of TCM syndromes. Sixteen CM patients diagnosed with liver-yang hyperactivity (LH) syndrome and 16 CM patients with qi-blood deficiency (QD) syndrome were recruited in this study. Thirty-one healthy controls (HCs) were also enrolled. All subjects underwent DTI and T1-weighted MRI acquisition. Thirty HCs and 30 CM patients (LH group: n = 15; QD group: n = 15) were included in the final analysis. No significant difference was observed in the DTI indexes between CM patients and HCs, including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD). The mean FAs of the left tapetum and the mean MD values for the right medial lemniscus and the right inferior cerebellar peduncle were significantly different in the LH and HC groups. The mean AD values for the right cingulate gyrus and the left uncinate fasciculus, as well as the mean RD for the right inferior cerebellar peduncle and the left tapetum, were also significantly different between these two groups. CM patients with LH and QD syndrome showed altered FA and diffusivity in comparison to healthy controls, suggesting that there may be significant white matter microstructural alterations in these patients.

RESUMO

Previous studies have reported changes in white matter microstructures in patients with insomnia. However, few neuroimaging studies have focused specifically on white matter tracts in insomnia patients after having received treatment. In this prospective study, diffusion-tensor imaging was used in two samples of heart-kidney imbalance insomnia patients who were treated with placebo or Jiao-Tai-Wan, a traditional Chinese medicine commonly used to treat heart-kidney imbalance insomnia, to assess the changes in white matter tracts. Tract-based spatial statistical analyses were first applied to compare the changes in mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy of white matter between 75 heart-kidney imbalance insomnia patients and 41 healthy control participants. In subsequent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, comparisons of mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy were also performed in 24 heart-kidney imbalance insomnia patients (8 males; 16 females; 42.5 ± 10.4 years) with Jiao-Tai-Wan and 26 heart-kidney imbalance insomnia patients (11 males; 15 females; 39.7 ± 9.4 years) with a placebo, with age and sex as covariates. Fractional anisotropy values in left corticospinal tract were increased in heart-kidney imbalance insomnia patients. Heart-kidney imbalance insomnia patients showed lower mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy values of several white matter tracts than healthy control participants, such as the bilateral anterior limb of internal capsule, bilateral superior longitudinal fasciculus and bilateral posterior corona radiata. After being treated with Jiao-Tai-Wan, heart-kidney imbalance insomnia patients showed a trend towards reduced fractional anisotropy values in the left corticospinal tract. Jiao-Tai-Wan may improve the sleep quality by reversing the structural changes of the left corticospinal tract caused by heart-kidney imbalance insomnia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thalamocortical white matter connectivity is disrupted in psychosis and is hypothesized to play a role in its etiology and associated cognitive impairment. Attenuated cognitive symptoms often begin in adolescence, during a critical phase of white matter and cognitive development. However, little is known about the development of thalamocortical white matter connectivity and its association with cognition. METHODS: This study characterized effects of age, sex, psychosis symptomatology, and cognition in thalamocortical networks in a large sample of youths (N = 1144, ages 8-22 years, 46% male) from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort, which included 316 typically developing youths, 330 youths on the psychosis spectrum, and 498 youths with other psychopathology. Probabilistic tractography was used to quantify percent total connectivity between the thalamus and six cortical regions and assess microstructural properties (i.e., fractional anisotropy) of thalamocortical white matter tracts. RESULTS: Overall, percent total connectivity of the thalamus was weakly associated with age and was not associated with psychopathology or cognition. In contrast, fractional anisotropy of all thalamocortical tracts increased significantly with age, was generally higher in males than females, and was lowest in youths on the psychosis spectrum. Fractional anisotropy of tracts linking the thalamus to prefrontal and posterior parietal cortices was related to better cognitive function across subjects. CONCLUSIONS: By characterizing the pattern of typical development and alterations in those at risk for psychotic disorders, this study provides a foundation for further conceptualization of thalamocortical white matter microstructure as a marker of neurodevelopment supporting cognition and an important risk marker for psychosis.

RESUMO

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) subjected to external alternating magnetic field can induce heat in MNPs due to hysteresis, which is usually employed for tumor hyperthermia. An effective hyperthermia treatment should selectively kill the tumor cells without damaging the ambient healthy tissue. Hence, it is important for hyperthermia to correctly control the alternating magnetic field-induced temperature of MNPs in the tumor. This work develops a thermal model to analyze various forms of temperature-rise with time in magnetic nanoparticles for tumor hyperthermia. Results show that there are horizontal, linear rise, square root, exponential decay and abrupt temperature-rise lines with time in MNPs. The horizontal, linear rise, and square root temperature lines with time are consistent with the available experimental data. It is worthily noted that the form of abrupt temperaturerise with time can result in harm to the normal cells or tissue. If the abrupt temperature-rise does not be controlled and predicted well.

RESUMO

Full-field swept-source optical coherence tomography (FF-SS-OCT) is an emerging technology with potential applications in ophthalmic imaging, microscopy, metrology, and other domains. Here we demonstrate a novel method of multiplexing FF-SS-OCT signals using carrier modulation (CM). The principle of CM could be used to inspect various properties of the scattered light, e.g. its spectrum, polarization, Doppler shift, or distribution in the pupil. The last of these will be explored in this work, where CM was used to acquire images passing through two different optical pupils. The two pupils contained semicircular optical windows with perpendicular orientations, with each window permitting measurement of scattering anisotropy in one dimension by inducing an optical delay between the images formed by the two halves of the pupil. Together, the two forms of multiplexing permit measurement of differential scattering anisotropy in the x and y dimensions simultaneously. To demonstrate the feasibility of this technique our carrier multiplexed directional FF-OCT (CM-D-FF-OCT) system was used to acquire images of a microlens array, human hair, onion skin and in vivo human retina. The results of these studies are presented and briefly discussed in the context of future development and application of this technique.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) trigonal selenium (t-Se) has become a new member in 2D semiconducting nanomaterial families. It is composed of well-aligned one-dimensional Se atomic chains bonded via van der Waals (vdW) interaction. The contribution of this unique anisotropic nanostructure to its mechanical properties has not been explored. Here, for the first time, we combine experimental and theoretical analyses to study the anisotropic mechanical properties of individual 2D t-Se nanosheets. It was found that its fracture strength and Young's modulus parallel to the atomic chain direction are much higher than along the transverse direction, which was attributed to the weak vdW interaction between Se atomic chains as compared to the covalent bonding within individual chains. Additionally, two distinctive fracture modes along two orthogonal loading directions were identified. This work provides important insights into the understanding of anisotropic mechanical behaviors of 2D semiconducting t-Se and opens new possibilities for future applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of tiaoren tongdu acupuncture method (for regulating the function of the Conception Vessel and promoting the circulation of the Governor Vessel) on fractional anisotropy (FA) and upper-extremity motor function after cerebral infarction by diffusion densor imaging (DTI) technology. METHODS: The patients with cerebral infarction were divided into an acupuncture group and a control group according to the random number table method, 27 cases in each group. In the control group, the basic treatment with conventional medication was used. In the acupuncture group, on the basic treatment as the control group, the tiaoren tongdu acupuncture method was provided. Main acupoints included Baihui (GV20), Shuigou(GV26), Chengjiang(CV24), Guanyuan(CV4), Qihai (CV6), Zhongwan (CV12), Shenting(GV24) and Mingmen(GV4). Supplementary points included Jianyu(LI15), Chize(LU5), Houxi (SI3), Weizhong (BL40), Zusanli (ST36) and Taichong (LR3) on the affected side. The needles were retained for 30 min. Acupuncture was given once a day, at the interval of 1 days every week, consecutively for 4 weeks. The upper extremity Fugl-Meyer assessment (UE-FMA) was used to evaluate the motor function of upper extremity before and after treatment. DTI was adopted to observe the FA values of infarct focus, posterior limb of internal capsule (PLIC) and cerebral peduncle on the affected side, as well as FA values at the corresponding parts on the healthy side in the patients of two groups. The relative differences (rFA) were calculated. RESULTS: Compared with their own pretreatment, the UE-FMA value was significantly higher after treatment in either of two groups separately (P<0.05 in the control group, P<0.01 in the acupuncture group). The difference of UE-FMA before and after treatment in the acupuncture group was larger than that in the control group (P<0.05). The FA and rFA values in infarct focus were higher than those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05). The FA and rFA differences before and after treatment in the infarct focus and PLIC on the affected side were higher in the acupuncture group as compared with the control group (P<0.05). The UE-FMA difference was positively correlated with the rFA difference of each part in either group (P<0.05), and the correlation was the strongest in PLIC on the affected side in either group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Tiaoren tongdu acupuncture significantly improves the upper limb movement function after cerebral infarction. The rFA value of PLIC combined with UE-FMA can be used to evaluate the therapeutic effect of acupuncture on the upper extremity movement after cerebral infarction.

RESUMO

The multifunctional combined nanoplatform has a wide application prospect in the synergistic treatment of cancer. Nevertheless, the traditional treatment of phototherapy is limited by the catalytic nanomaterial itself, so the effect is not satisfactory. Here, the arris of the anisotropic truncated octahedral Au (TOh Au) was coated with noble metal Pt to form a spatial separation structure, which enhanced the local surface plasmonic resonance and thus boosted the photocatalytic effect. In this system, the highly efficient photocatalysis provides a strong guarantee for oncotherapy. On the one hand, the structure of arris deposition adequately improves the efficiency of photothermal conversion, which substantially improves the effectiveness of photothermal therapy. On the other hand, in situ oxygen production of Pt ameliorates tumor hypoxia, and through the O2 self-production and sales mode, the growth and development of tumor were inhibited. Meanwhile, under the enhanced photocatalysis, more O2 were produced, which greatly evolved the treatment effect of photodynamic therapy. In the end, the addition of hyaluronic acid can specifically target osteosarcoma cells while improving the retention time and biocompatibility of the material in the body. Thus, the nanocomposite shows superexcellent synergistic enhancement of photothermal conversion efficiency and photodynamic capability in vitro and in vivo, which provides a potential possibility for osteosarcoma cure.

RESUMO

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) disrupts thalamic and cortical integrity. The effect of post-injury reorganization and plasticity in thalamocortical pathways on the functional outcome remains unclear. We evaluated whether TBI causes structural changes in the thalamocortical axonal projection terminals in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) that lead to hyperexcitability. TBI was induced in adult male Sprague Dawley rats with lateral fluid-percussion injury. A virus carrying the fluorescent-tagged opsin channel rhodopsin 2 transgene was injected into the ventroposterior thalamus. We then traced the thalamocortical pathways and analyzed the reorganization of their axonal terminals in S1. Next, we optogenetically stimulated the thalamocortical relays from the ventral posterior lateral and medial nuclei to assess the post-TBI functionality of the pathway. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that TBI did not alter the spatial distribution or lamina-specific targeting of projection terminals in S1. TBI reduced the axon terminal density in the motor cortex by 44% and in S1 by 30%. A nematic tensor-based analysis revealed that in control rats, the axon terminals in layer V were orientated perpendicular to the pial surface (60.3°). In TBI rats their orientation was more parallel to the pial surface (5.43°, difference between the groups p < 0.05). Moreover, the level of anisotropy of the axon terminals was high in controls (0.063) compared with TBI rats (0.045, p < 0.05). Optical stimulation of the sensory thalamus increased alpha activity in electroencephalography by 312% in controls (p > 0.05) and 237% (p > 0.05) in TBI rats compared with the baseline. However, only TBI rats showed increased beta activity (33%) with harmonics at 5 Hz. Our findings indicate that TBI induces reorganization of thalamocortical axonal terminals in the perilesional cortex, which alters responses to thalamic stimulation.

RESUMO

A new, to the best of our knowledge, method for Stokes vector imaging is proposed to achieve imaging and dynamic monitoring of a non-labeled cytomembrane. In this work, a polarization state vector is described by a Stokes vector and expressed in chrominance space. A physical quantity called polarization chromaticity value (PCV) corresponding to a Stokes vector is used as the imaging parameter to perform Stokes vector imaging. By using the PCV imaging technique, the Stokes vector can be expressed in three-dimensional real space rather than in a Poincare sphere. Furthermore, a four-way Stokes parameter confocal microscopy system is designed to measure four Stokes parameters simultaneously and obtain micro-imaging. Label-free living onion cell membranes and their plasmolysis process are selected as the representative micro-anisotropy experimental analysis. It is proved that PCV imaging can perform visualization of cytomembranes, and further, microscopic orientation is demonstrated. The prospect of universal measurement of anisotropy details for analysis and diagnosis is provided.

RESUMO

Intercalation in black phosphorus (BP) can induce and modulate a variety of the properties including superconductivity like other two-dimensional (2D) materials. In this perspective, spatially controlled intercalation has the possibility to incorporate different properties into a single crystal of BP. We demonstrate anisotropic angstrom-wide (∼4.3 Å) Cu intercalation in BP, where Cu atoms are intercalated along a zigzag direction of BP because of its inherent anisotropy. With atomic structure, its microstructural effects, arising from the angstrom-wide Cu intercalation, were investigated and extended to relation with macrostructure. As the intercalation mechanism, it was revealed by in situ transmission electron microscopy and theoretical calculation that Cu atoms are intercalated through top-down direction of BP. The Cu intercalation anisotropically induces transition of angstrom-wide electronic channels from semiconductor to semimetal in BP. Our findings throw light on the fundamental relationship between microstructure changes and properties in intercalated BP, and tailoring anisotropic 2D materials at angstrom scale.

RESUMO

During the second and third trimesters of human gestation, rapid neurodevelopment is underpinned by fundamental processes including neuronal migration, cellular organization, cortical layering, and myelination. In this time, white matter growth and maturation lay the foundation for an efficient network of structural connections. Detailed knowledge about this developmental trajectory in the healthy human fetal brain is limited, in part, due to the inherent challenges of acquiring high-quality MRI data from this population. Here, we use state-of-the-art high-resolution multishell motion-corrected diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI), collected as part of the developing Human Connectome Project (dHCP), to characterize the in utero maturation of white matter microstructure in 113 fetuses aged 22 to 37 wk gestation. We define five major white matter bundles and characterize their microstructural features using both traditional diffusion tensor and multishell multitissue models. We found unique maturational trends in thalamocortical fibers compared with association tracts and identified different maturational trends within specific sections of the corpus callosum. While linear maturational increases in fractional anisotropy were seen in the splenium of the corpus callosum, complex nonlinear trends were seen in the majority of other white matter tracts, with an initial decrease in fractional anisotropy in early gestation followed by a later increase. The latter is of particular interest as it differs markedly from the trends previously described in ex utero preterm infants, suggesting that this normative fetal data can provide significant insights into the abnormalities in connectivity which underlie the neurodevelopmental impairments associated with preterm birth.
